Sjoeke Nüsken has been playing in the English league at Chelsea since 2023. How did the midfielder find her way out of her difficult situation there?

A sports psychologist and the support of national coach Christian Wück have helped national player Sjoeke Nüsken out of her crisis at Chelsea FC. "It wasn't always an easy phase, to be honest," admitted the 25-year-old midfielder ahead of Germany's first World Cup qualifier against Slovenia in Dresden this Tuesday (17:45/ARD).

Nüsken had only regained her regular place at the English champions in recent weeks, having previously often sat on the bench. "I also worked with a sports psychologist, which was extremely important to me. But it was also hugely important to me that I got my confidence from Christian here," explained the former Frankfurt player. "That helped me enormously during this time. I was always grateful that I was still allowed to continue playing here."

Nüsken (53 caps/7 goals) has become a central figure in the DFB women's game since 2024 following the loss of Munich's Lena Oberdorf (two cruciate ligament ruptures within 15 months) - at the Olympic Games in France and at the European Championships in Switzerland.

Nüsken has always been a regular for national coach Wück. "Above all, I would say that I'm a player who takes responsibility on the pitch. I think I'm relatively good at recognizing where things might be going wrong in difficult situations," said the Hamm-born player. "I think I can recognize a lot from midfield and pass on what I see. That's a leadership quality that I've developed and that I want to continue to bring to the national team."
