Christoph Baumgartner from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig will travel to the World Cup in the USA despite his operation following a serious muscle injury. The 26-year-old will continue his rehab at the Austrian national team's camp in Santa Barbara (USA), RB announced. The association and his club are thus complying with the 26-year-old's wish to complete his rehab with the Austrian national team and support his teammates on site during the World Cup. Baumgartner is traveling to the USA today and will work on his comeback under optimal conditions and with medical support from the ÖFB as well as in close coordination with RB Leipzig. The attacking midfielder suffered a muscle injury in his right thigh during the warm-up before the international friendly against Tunisia (1-0) and underwent surgery in Turku, Finland. Baumgartner's absence will affect the Austrian national team and RB, especially as he has been in top form this season. Austria will face defending champions Argentina, Algeria and Jordan at the World Cup. The team is coached by German Ralf Rangnick. Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de).
