The transfer of international footballer Timo Werner from RB Leipzig to Tottenham Hotspur is complete. The 27-year-old attacker successfully passed the medical check at the English Premier League club on Tuesday and is moving to London for an initial six months. The two clubs made the announcement on Tuesday evening. Tottenham also secured a purchase option for Werner, which is reportedly worth 17 million euros.
Werner wants to gain match practice at Spurs and recommend himself for the home European Championships in the summer. He lost his starting place at Leipzig, never started in the Champions League and only twice in the Bundesliga.
In Tottenham coach Angelos Postecoglou's system, Werner could initially take on the role of Heung-min Son. The former Bundesliga professional is in action at the Asian Cup in January. Werner could make his debut for the north Londoners as early as Sunday, when his new club take on Manchester United. According to Tottenham, he will wear the number 16 shirt.
Werner already played for Chelsea FC in England from 2020 to 2022, having signed the attacker from Leipzig for 53 million euros. A year and a half ago, the Swabian returned to Saxony for €20 million, but has not proved to be the reinforcement that was hoped for since then.
"Timo and we want him to gain as much match practice as possible, also with a view to the European Championships in Germany next summer," said Leipzig's sporting director Rouven Schröder: "He was shown the opportunity to do so at Tottenham Hotspur, so a loan makes sense for all parties."
