Sterner on top: Responds to criticism with a strong performance and a goal

A neat play leads to the 1-0 lead

The fact that the hosts were still able to go into halftime with a lead was due to a neat play initiated by the goal-scorer, Sterner, himself. He won the ball in midfield, spotted the opening in Darmstadt’s central defense, sprinted into it, played a give-and-go with Vermeij, and calmly slotted the ball into the corner.

After that, not much happened on either side until the halftime whistle. Both teams clearly struggled with the new ball, which kept bouncing off the players’ feet. Dynamo largely managed to keep Darmstadt away from their own penalty area and also weathered set-piece situations against the tall visitors unscathed.

Inexplicable Retreat After a Big Chance

The second half began with a big chance for the Saxons. Bobzien and Vermeij linked up for a give-and-go. The shot by the new signing from Mainz was just barely saved by 98 goalkeeper Marcel Schuhen. After that, however, Dynamo inexplicably retreated, barely looked to attack themselves, and left the game to the Hessians. Even counterattacks with a numerical advantage were called off by the yellow-and-blacks.

It wasn’t until the red card—Kai Klefisch had fouled Niklas Hauptmann after previously being cautioned for complaining—that the hosts regained the upper hand. However, they lacked the determination to add a second goal to make it 2-0. “We were probably more focused on defending the 1-0 lead than on launching any counterattacks,” said defensive leader Thomas Keller. A shot by Jakob Lemmer that hit the post (87th minute) remained the most dangerous attacking opportunity.
