Two days after taking over, Jan Siewert pulled off a major surprise with Mainz 05. The victory over RB Leipizig should also improve his chances.

Jan Siewert could remain coach of FSV Mainz 05 in the longer term following the surprising 2:0 win over RB Leipzig. "He is coach until further notice. He has not reduced his chances. He has it in his own hands. He sent out the best letter of application," said sporting director Martin Schmidt on Saturday about the interim coach, who took over from Bo Svensson on Thursday. The 41-year-old Siewert had already taken charge of a game on an interim basis in the 2020/21 season before Svensson arrived. Back then, the team lost 5-2 to FC Bayern.

"I'm totally happy. This win is for the club, for the players - and above all for Bo Svensson," said Siewert, who only had one training session with the team at the bottom of the table before the game against the top team. On his future, he said: "I like to take on responsibility, and that's what I'm doing - it's logical. At the moment, I want to help everyone, help the players, help the staff - that's my job, and that's exactly what I'm doing."
