The handball players of SC DHfK Leipzig have celebrated their first away win in the German league in almost five months. The team of Head Coach Runar Sigtryggsson won 25:23 (10:11) at HC Erlangen after a strong fighting performance.
National player Luca Witzke scored eight goals to become the best scorer for the club from Saxony, which is in twelfth place with 21:37 points. Ex-Leipzig player Viggo Kristjansson scored six times for relegation-threatened Erlangen (12:48).
6103 spectators in Nuremberg saw a hectic opening phase for both teams. With their 5:1 defense, the visitors did indeed hamper the HCE's flow of play, but were far too uninspired in attack and so trailed 4:6 after 15 minutes. It was only in the final phase of the first half that Leipzig brought more dynamism into its actions.
The pace of the game picked up after the break. The HCE maintained a narrow lead up to 17:16 in the 42nd minute, before Leipzig's goalkeeper Kristian Saeveras hit top form and made crucial saves to help the visitors produce a 6:2 run to make it 22:19 in the 54th minute.
The Norwegian, who had recently excelled in the 30:18 home win against Wetzlar, made a total of 15 saves. Although Erlangen fought its way back to 21:22 in the 56th minute, Witzke then took charge for Leipzig and scored two goals to clinch the game.
