The players of Lokomotive Leipzig and Hallescher FC went on strike for a possible promotion reform at the top match in the North-East Regional Football League. After the kick-off by referee Rasmus Jessen, the professionals remained on the pitch for 30 seconds while the stadium announcer at the Bruno Plache Stadium campaigned for a possible reform.

Currently, only three regional league champions are promoted, while two title holders play off for the fourth promotion place in a relegation play-off. Numerous clubs, including Bundesliga, second and third division clubs, have joined forces and are seeking a reform.

"Compass model" preferred

The players' strike at the start of the match, which was broadcast live by MDR, can be seen as a prelude to further action. At the meeting on March 25, the working group for the promotion reform developed two models. The so-called "compass model", which would give the clubs short travel distances, was preferred.

Last week, the Bavarian Football Association presented a third proposal, which would disadvantage teams from the north-east in particular. A preliminary decision could be made at the meeting of the state and regional presidents on May 14.
