The German Football Association (DFB) will pay Red Bull one million euros for the release of Jürgen Klopp. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf announced during the presentation of the new national team coach in Frankfurt that the money would go to the Red Bull Wings for Life Foundation. Klopp had most recently served as Head of Global Soccer at the soft drink company; he was allowed to terminate his ongoing contract in order to take over the senior national team.
In addition to the million-euro payment, the DFB also committed, as part of the deal with Red Bull, to play three international matches in Leipzig through 2030. Leipzig is home to RB Leipzig, the Bundesliga club founded and sponsored by Red Bull.
Neuendorf emphasized that there had been very constructive discussions with Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff. It quickly became clear, he said, that it would be impossible to serve as national team coach while also remaining employed by Red Bull.
