Eight-Goal Thriller: Heidenheim Crushes Dynamo

1. FC Heidenheim pulled off a stunning upset in the 2. Bundesliga, defeating Dynamo Dresden 5-3 (0-1) in a wild match. The visitors took the lead twice—even while down a man. But after a bizarre own goal by Dresden, Heidenheim turned the game around and picked up three crucial points following two consecutive competitive losses.

Vincent Vermeij put Dynamo ahead in the 30th minute. Thomas Dähne, who had been chosen over Frank Feller in goal for Heidenheim, couldn’t reach the Dutchman’s header. After the break, the team recently relegated from the Bundesliga stepped up their game and equalized through Jan Schöppner (67th minute).

Then things got wild: Dresden’s Thomas Keller (69th) was shown a yellow-red card for a foul, and shortly afterward, Robert Wagner put the Saxons ahead 2–1 (73rd). But Heidenheim struck back while playing with a man advantage. Friedrich Müller sent the ball looping high into his own net (77'). In the closing stages, Oualid Mhamdi (87th), Julian Niehues (89th), and Maximilian Breunig (90+1) scored for FCH within a few minutes. Then Dresden’s Jonas Sterner (90+7) put the final nail in the coffin.

Heidenheim had most recently lost 1–4 at Hertha BSC and then 2–5 to fourth-division side SSV Jeddeloh II in the first round of the DFB Cup. Against Dresden, however, coach Frank Schmidt’s team showed resilience.
