In the new Leipzig coach's first competitive match, the opponent isn't really a challenge. The game in Trier is decided quickly.

RB Leipzig comfortably advanced to the second round of the DFB Cup in the first competitive match under new coach Martín Demichelis. The Saxons dominated fourth-division side Eintracht Trier with a 6-0 (3-0) victory. At the Moselstadion, Brajan Gruda scored after about 120 seconds, followed by Willi Orban (6th minute), Ridle Baku (45+2), Conrad Harder (76th), Antonio Nusa (90’+2), and Ezechiel Banzuzi (90’+5) scored the goals for the heavy favorites.

Leipzig Applies Pressure Right Away

From the very start, in the sold-out Moselstadion with 9,000 spectators, the Leipzig team left no doubt as to who is the Champions League participant and who plays in the Regional League. The Trier fans were still busy taking down their choreography—which celebrated their club’s tradition in contrast to the Red Bull club—when the Saxons scored their first goal. Banzuzi sent a cross, and Gruda pushed the ball over the line.

And RB kept it coming. This time, Gruda set it up and Orban scored. After six minutes, the game was as good as over. Demichelis, who watched the game from the bench or calmly from the tartan track at the edge of the field, had every reason to be satisfied.

Even though his team slowed the pace a bit after their strong start, Trier was able to break free more often. However, RB didn’t allow the hosts any real scoring chances for a long time. Eintracht’s first chance came from Tim Sausen, who, unmarked, shot the ball well over the goal.

Baku scores, Demichelis makes four substitutions

Even with less pressure, the visitors remained the more dangerous team. Trier had goalkeeper Leon-Oumar Wechsel and the post to thank for conceding only one more goal before halftime. Just seconds before the halftime whistle, Baku extended the lead to 3-0.

Demichelis took advantage of the comfortable lead and made four substitutions at once just past the one-hour mark. The former Argentine pro from FC Bayern Munich brought in new signing Rocco Reitz, Max Finkgräfe, Benjamin Henrichs, and Harder.

There was now significantly less action on the field than there had been for much of the first half. Players, coaches, fans—everyone knew there would be no cup upset in Trier today. In the closing stages, RB picked up the pace once again. Harder, Nusa, and Banzuzi scored Leipzig’s fourth, fifth, and sixth goals.

RB may face a tougher challenge this coming Saturday. That’s when they’ll kick off the Bundesliga season at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
