Oest: “A new caucus leader alone isn’t enough”

With approval ratings hovering around 20 percent, Florian Oest, a CDU politician from Saxony, is calling into question the Union’s self-image as a people’s party and calling for a new strategy.

Florian Oest, a CDU member of the Bundestag from Saxony, believes his party remains in a difficult position even after the resignation of Bundestag parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn. “A new parliamentary group leader alone won’t be enough,” he said on Saturday. “The approval ratings for the Union are disastrous.”

He entered politics “to shape and improve the lives of the people in our country,” Oest said. He, too, is frustrated by the policy of small steps. “A lot of things need to be put to the test,” he continued.

Oest called for a special meeting of the Bundestag parliamentary group and a conference of district chairpersons. “In the current situation, the Bundestag parliamentary group must meet quickly now and clarify matters.” He considered Spahn’s resignation inevitable. However, he said, we shouldn’t now pretend that “everything is fine again in the Union” just because we’re getting a new parliamentary group leader: “That’s simply not the case,” the politician emphasized.

Given its approval ratings, is the CDU still a people’s party?

“Our self-image as the Union is to make policy for the overwhelming majority of people in Germany. With approval ratings around 20 percent, the question of whether the CDU will still be a people’s party in the future is more than justified,” emphasized Oest, who is also head of the CDU’s Görlitz district association. He noted that people across the country, just like CDU members, are very dissatisfied with the current situation.

Following a special session of the Bundestag parliamentary group, the CDU’s district chairpersons must meet urgently to develop a strategy for the next 24 months. “This is about substance, not personnel debates. How do we regain our former strength? What does a clear vision for Germany look like? How do we regain trust?” Oest explained.

“Not everything that is legally possible is morally legitimate.”

Jens Spahn and his husband, Daniel Funke, announced on Wednesday that they had become parents. A surrogate mother in the U.S. gave birth to the baby. This had sparked a controversial debate.

On Saturday, Spahn announced his resignation. Surrogacy is not permitted in Germany, and Spahn’s party has clearly spoken out against legalizing it. In the U.S., however, it is permitted. “Not everything that is legally possible is morally legitimate,” said Florian Oest.
