Ahead of the upcoming social reforms, the three East German CDU state premiers are calling on the federal government to give greater consideration to the perspective of the East. “Anyone who wants to know how structural change succeeds—and where it fails—will find the answers here. That is precisely why taking the East German perspective into account is a benefit for all of Germany,” they write in a joint statement obtained by the German Press Agency. Specifically, they are concerned with preserving the full pension after 45 years of contributions and ensuring the affordability of long-term care.
The state premiers—Mario Voigt of Thuringia, Sven Schulze of Saxony-Anhalt, and Michael Kretschmer of Saxony—plan to present their demands on Thursday. They will meet in southern Saxony-Anhalt. The state is facing an important state election in September; the AfD is far ahead in the polls and hopes to form a single-party government. MDR had previously reported on the state premiers’ statement.
