For Saxony's Minister of Education Conrad Clemens, at least the direction is right: the annoying loss of lessons in schools is decreasing.

In the first half of the school year, 9.1 percent of the planned teaching hours were canceled at schools in Saxony. Minister of Education Conrad Clemens (CDU) nevertheless sees a positive trend. This is because the so-called scheduled absence fell by 10.8 percent compared to the same period in the previous school year. In total, 3.3 percent of lessons were canceled as planned (first half of 2024/25: 3.7 percent). 5.8 percent (5.7) were unscheduled.

Distinction between scheduled and unscheduled absences

The statistics distinguish between scheduled and unscheduled absences. Scheduled absences occur when the timetable is canceled due to a lack of teachers and classrooms. Unscheduled absences are caused by teacher illness, school events, further training, strikes, school bus delays or other unforeseeable events.

Clemens believes the efforts have not yet reached their goal

"We can see that the direction is now right. For the first time in 10 years, absenteeism is falling," commented Clemens on the figures. The measures taken in recent years are working. They are sticking to the course, but have not yet reached their goal. There is no need to correct the package of measures.

In spring 2025, Clemens launched a package of measures to improve the situation. Among other things, older teachers are to work more hours than before. In addition, more digital formats and more interdisciplinary teaching were targeted. Fewer written exams and class tests are another component. Teachers have been seconded to schools with particular shortages. "I am delighted and grateful to all teachers that it is working," emphasized the minister.
