Five elections, three winners and two more rounds of voting: that is the result of the local elections in Saxony on Sunday.

Görlitz, Döbeln, Werdau, Aue-Bad Schlema and Dippoldiswalde: the citizens of these five Saxon cities were called to vote for the Lord Mayor. The three incumbents in Döbeln, Werdau and Dippoldiswalde won directly. In Görlitz and Aue-Bad Schlema, however, a second round of voting is necessary because none of the candidates received more than 50 percent of the vote.

Görlitz mayor with 49.1 percent

The Görlitz incumbent Octavian Ursu (CDU) narrowly missed out on the necessary majority with 49.1 percent of the vote, according to the provisional final result. AfD member of the state parliament Sebastian Wippe followed in second place with 44.3 percent.

Sabine Christian (Linke) and Hagen Jeschke (non-party) were a distant second with 3.4 percent and 3.2 percent respectively. Voter turnout was 58.8 percent. For the approximately 44,500 eligible voters, there will be a second round of voting on May 31, in which the candidate with the most votes will win.

In Aue-Bad Schlema, far-right candidate ahead

In Aue-Bad Schlema, none of the five candidates prevailed as the successor to the long-time head of the town Heinrich Kohl (CDU). According to the provisional final result, Stefan Hartung from the small far-right party "Freie Sachsen" (29.0 percent) received the most votes.

He therefore finished well ahead of Marcus Hoffmann (CDU) with 23.6% and Danny Weber (Free Voters' Association) with 22.5%. Lars Bochmann received 18.5 percent of the vote. Tony Neuß (Left Party) came last. Voter turnout in the town of 19,000 inhabitants in the Ore Mountains was 60.8 percent. The second round of voting is scheduled for June 7.

Döbeln retains Liebhauser as mayor

In Döbeln (district of Central Saxony), one thing is certain: the new mayor's name is the same as the old one: Incumbent Sven Liebhauser (CDU) secured the election victory. According to the provisional final result, he received 56.4 percent of the vote - significantly more than the required absolute majority. He was followed by Sven Weißflog (Freie Wähler), who received 33.4 percent of the vote.

Sven Hofmann from the small far-right party "Freie Sachsen" received 6.0 percent and Jörg Koitsch (BSW) 4.2 percent. Voter turnout was 52.4 percent.

In Dippoldiswalde and Werdau, incumbents also won

The mayor of Dippoldiswalde (Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains), Kerstin Körner, defended her office even more clearly. As an independent candidate, she won 77.4 percent of the vote according to the provisional results and will therefore remain mayor for a further seven years. Marcus Wünschmann (non-party) and Tom Wittig (Left Party), on the other hand, had no chance with 15.0 percent and 7.6 percent respectively. Only 48.5 percent of eligible voters found their way to the ballot box.

Mayor Sören Kristensen (Independent List) achieved a similarly strong result in Werdau (Zwickau district). 71.9 percent of voters voted for the incumbent, who thus remains head of the town hall. The remaining votes were split between challengers Philipp Meyer (Bürger für Werdau) with 19.3 percent and Willy Leo Lippold (Linke) with 8.8 percent. Here, too, voter turnout was low at 47.8 percent.
