The Left Party in Saxony is pushing for the reintroduction of a wealth tax in Germany. The state executive committee decided at a closed-door meeting to launch a statewide campaign calling on the CDU-SPD state government to advocate for a wealth tax at the federal level, the party announced. A party convention in mid-November is set to mark the start of this effort. “The pervasive mismanagement—for example, in daycare centers, roads, and bridges—and the government’s radical austerity policies are tearing our society apart,” explained state chair Anja Eichhorn. A wealth tax based on The Left’s proposal would generate 4.4 billion euros annually for the Free State of Saxony. The tax would be borne by the top two percent of the population. “No one will become poor because of this, but everyone will become richer,” said Eichhorn. The introduction of a wealth tax is a nationwide issue for The Left. Such a tax existed in Germany until 1996. However, following a ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court regarding the calculation method used at the time, it is no longer levied. The SPD, the Greens, and the BSW have also spoken out in favor of reintroducing a wealth tax in the past. Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de). All rights reserved
