Optimism instead of resignation: The Saxony SPD wants to push for reforms and strengthen the East German perspective. There is also talk of trust in politics.

Despite discontent in the state, the leadership of the Saxon SPD is expressing confidence. “Germany has every reason to look to the future with confidence,” said SPD Chairwoman Kathrin Michel at an extraordinary party convention in Dresden. One should not conclude that Germany’s best years are already behind it. “The opposite is true. Right now is the moment that decides whether we bury our heads in the sand or shape the future.”

Michel: Politics Must Earn Trust

Michel acknowledged that trust does not fall from the sky. “People see very clearly what isn’t going well right now. They see an economy that has been complex for years. They are experiencing international crises and wars. They are worried about their jobs, energy costs, and the future of their children and grandchildren.” Many people would wonder whether politics is even up to these challenges anymore. “Politics cannot demand trust. Politics must earn trust.”

Party leader sees Germany as a “land of opportunity”

According to Michel, Germany is a “land of opportunity.” “Perhaps we sometimes focus too much on the emptiness of the glass. And too little on the fruits? We have outstanding companies, dedicated employees, high-performing research, and a strong democracy. Above all, however, we have people who are willing to take on responsibility,” the party leader said optimistically.

SPD aims to put Saxony on a reform course

Co-chair Henning Homann elaborated further on the situation in the Free State. “We are putting Saxony on a reform course,” he said to the applause of the 140 delegates. He discussed education policy in detail. Homann emphasized that in the coming years, the issue of canceled classes will be replaced in the political debate by the question: Where in this state do we actually still have schools? He noted that a school is more than just an educational institution; it is a place where people in a community come together.

Resolution on Education Policy

In the afternoon, the party convention adopted a resolution on education policy. “We want to secure schools in Saxony for the long term. Declining student numbers must not be misinterpreted as an invitation to cut back. On the contrary: We must now strengthen schools, keep school commutes short, and ensure educational quality,” Homann explained. A school is more than just a building. “It is not only a place of learning, but it is often the center of social life in villages, communities, and neighborhoods.”

The SPD’s goal is to maintain schools and retain teaching staff despite declining student numbers. “We need reliable resources and want to achieve good education for all. That is why we are advocating for an amendment to the school law,” emphasized Homann. In addition to extended joint learning beyond elementary school, the SPD is advocating for the strengthening of community schools, mixed-age teaching, and the preservation of smaller school locations.

Federal Environment Minister: Eastern Germany Must Be Attractive

As a guest from the federal government, Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider addressed the delegates. Among other things, he spoke about the need for Eastern Germany to attract more people again. “We must be attractive to people from all regions, whether from North Rhine-Westphalia, the Netherlands, Poland, India, or other parts of the world. Only then will we have a future.”

Young Socialists’ motion on police law fails

The Saxon Young Socialists put pressure on their party regarding the new police law. In a motion to the party convention, they called on the state parliamentary group not to approve the draft law in its current form and to work toward fundamental changes. They criticized, above all, the police’s new surveillance powers. However, the motion did not receive a majority vote from the delegates.

The SPD in Saxony currently forms a minority government with the CDU and seeks majorities in rotation with the Greens, the Left Party, or the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance. In the 2024 state election, the Social Democrats received 7.3 percent of the vote here. They currently have around 4,400 members.
