The renovation of the State Parliament in Dresden, which has been planned for years, is taking shape. The first construction fences indicate that excavation work will soon begin.

Saxony's state parliament will be a construction site for years to come. According to the Saxon State Real Estate and Construction Management (SIB), it is due to be completed in June. The construction fences are currently being erected. The excavation of the building pit and special civil engineering work for the extension are scheduled for the second half of the year. The state parliament provided information about the first steps on Wednesday. The news portal Tag24 reported first.

According to the SIB, the extension will cost around 73.6 million euros. The so-called cube in the courtyard of the state parliament is estimated to cost 38.7 million euros. It will take around four years to complete the two new buildings. Only then can the renovation of the old building begin. This is because the MPs must first move into their new offices in the extension.

In 2019, the state-owned company SIB commissioned the office of state parliament architect Peter Kulka (1937-2024) to plan the renovation and extension. Following his death in 2004, the project is now being continued by his daughter Katrin Leers-Kulka.

Accessibility of the state parliament changes

According to the state parliament, the accessibility of the parliament will also change with the construction work until further notice. The public entrance to the new building with the plenary chamber, citizens' foyer and the press center of the state press conference is only accessible from the Elbe. The 70-metre-long extension is being built on the open space between the Maritim Hotel and the Elbe. It will be connected to the existing building underground via a tunnel.

The Saxon State Parliament, which won an award for its architecture, was inaugurated in 1993. It is directly connected to an old building from the 1920s, in which most of the MPs' offices are located. Three decades of use have left their mark. For example, the entire IT network and the electrical and media technology in the state parliament need to be replaced. Accessibility, fire protection and lighting are also to be optimized by the construction measures.
