The Federal Government's Commissioner for Eastern Germany, Elisabeth Kaiser, believes that the representation of East German interests in the Federal Government is still necessary. Before she took up her post, she asked herself why the post of Commissioner for Eastern Germany still existed, Kaiser said in an interview with the "Freie Presse" newspaper. But if you look at factors such as business capital, property, income, pensions or overall economic strength, the former German-German border is still clearly recognizable.
"And as long as that is the case, a strong voice is needed within the federal government for East German interests. The whole country benefits from a strong East," said Kaiser.
The inequality should not simply be accepted. "We must ask ourselves how prosperity and wealth can be distributed differently in Germany. Not only in terms of East and West, but also in the West there is of course a gap between rich and poor. In Germany, wealth is inherited to an extent that can never be achieved through performance. We have to tackle this issue," said the Commissioner for Eastern Europe.
