Kathrin Michel, chairwoman of the SPD in Saxony, has reacted with understanding and respect to the resignation of SPD leader and Federal Minister of Labor Bärbel Bas. “Holding political office entails responsibility. It does not mean you have to put up with everything,” Michel said in a statement. She thanked Bas for her dedication “with great passion and a clear stance.” That morning, Bas had announced her immediate resignation as labor minister and SPD chairwoman. She cited, on the one hand, the death of her stepdaughter and, on the other, public attacks against her—including some from within the ranks of the coalition partner, the CDU/CSU. Bas needs peace and space to grieve during this difficult time, Michel said. “The fact that she was subjected to further political attacks even in this situation is bitter.” Co-state party chair Henning Homann backed the decision to appoint Alexander Schweitzer as her successor at the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. “He is an excellent choice and stands for social security, economic strength, and policies that are close to the people,” he said.
