The state directorate has confirmed that the decision to abolish the Commissioner for Foreigners in the district of Bautzen is lawful. However, this does not mean that there will no longer be anyone in the district office to deal with integration issues in future. The district is currently working on an integration concept that also includes the tasks and position of a commissioner, the state directorate announced.
The district council decided to abolish the commissioner last year in a secret ballot at the request of the AfD. As the supervisory authority, the state directorate examined whether this was in breach of applicable law. It found that there had been "no significant violation" of the Saxon County Code.
However, the Saxon Integration and Participation Act obliges all districts to appoint a full-time integration officer. Exceptions are only possible in justified individual cases. The district of Bautzen is currently coordinating with the responsible Ministry of Social Affairs, according to the state directorate.
