81 years after the widespread destruction of Chemnitz by Allied bombers in the Second World War, initiatives, associations and churches are sending out a variety of signals for peace in the world. A wide-ranging program will be offered on Thursday (5 March). According to the Chemnitz Peace Day working group, the aim is to keep the memory alive and open up perspectives for respectful coexistence in the present and future.
In the morning, the victims of the bombing and all victims of war and tyranny will be commemorated at the municipal cemetery. Throughout the day, there will be readings, music, interviews as well as information and dialog opportunities at an action area on Neumarkt. For example, the abuse of children as soldiers will be discussed, visitors will be able to make peace doves and print peace wishes on fabric, but also discuss with young people who reject compulsory military service.
There will be a screening of films by contemporary witnesses in the town hall and in the afternoon there will be a star walk to Neumarkt under the title "Friedenswege durch die Stadt" (peace routes through the city). The central event on the topic of "Staying Peaceful" will take place there at 6 p.m., before the day is rounded off with a church service and a collective moment of reflection in the evening. According to the city administration, traffic disruptions are to be expected in the city center from midday due to the numerous events.
