There’s a lot of speculation following the AfD party convention in Erfurt: How much longer will the Weidel-Chrupalla duo continue to work together? Will Weidel soon take over completely? Chrupalla has a clear opinion on the matter.

Following the AfD party convention in Erfurt, AfD leader Tino Chrupalla spoke out against abolishing the dual leadership structure in his party. During the presentation of his autobiography *Handwerk – Meister – Politik* in Berlin, the politician from Saxony highlighted the successes of recent years under his leadership alongside Alice Weidel.

Is the cow doing too well, so she wants to go ice skating?

“Why should we question this successful model?” he said. “I get the impression that the cow is doing too well—now she wants to go ice skating.” The AfD has more than doubled its election results over the past four years. The election results at the party convention—Weidel emerged stronger, while Chrupalla suffered a setback—were interpreted as a sign pointing toward a possible single-leader structure.

While Chrupalla acknowledged that it was a valid question and expressed the expectation that there could be a new discussion—and even a decision—on the matter in the coming years, he also voiced his skepticism: “If the party says we want a single leader now, then it’s only fair to ask: Will we be even more successful? Will we then reach 40 percent at the federal level?”

Chrupalla Reiterates Good Relationship with Weidel

Chrupalla reiterated his good relationship with Weidel. In his book, he writes that after four years of working together at the party’s helm, he “really likes” her. They “still don’t” agree on everything, but they now understand each other without words. Chrupalla rejected the idea of dividing the new federal executive committee into different camps. He gets along “wonderfully” with all executive committee members. Camps change all the time anyway. At the executive board election in Erfurt, Weidel’s supporters were particularly successful.

Childhood in the GDR, painter, politician

In his book, Chrupalla describes his childhood in the GDR and recounts his journey from master painter to politician. During the presentation, he called for greater recognition of the skilled trades. He noted that people without an academic education are still looked down upon to some extent. Disrespect toward this “group” is widespread—“in some cases even within my own party.” He expressed his hope that more people with a background in the skilled trades would enter politics.

Chrupalla also urged members of his own party to complete a vocational training program or a degree before entering politics. “My knees aren’t shot because, as I said, I had to kiss up to other politicians or friends or anyone else. My knees are shot because I’ve laid 60, 70,000 square meters of flooring and screed,” said the AfD leader.

His autobiography, which he says he wrote over the course of about a year with the help of a ghostwriter, was created without AI. “This is an AI-free book,” said Chrupalla.
