The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) in Saxony plans to launch a statewide campaign to mobilize opposition to impending cuts in social services. In addition to large-scale posters, the campaign will include legislative initiatives to prevent additional burdens on citizens and municipalities, according to the BSW. The campaign’s slogan is “Not like this!” With an eye toward the upcoming two-year budget, the BSW state parliamentary caucus is calling on the government to clearly prioritize social services and local governments.
Motion in the State Parliament on Social Security
The core of the campaign is a motion by the BSW parliamentary group titled “Ensuring Social Security and Good Living Conditions in Saxony—Strengthening Health Care, Long-Term Care, and Education.” Among other things, it calls for significantly and permanently capping out-of-pocket costs in nursing homes, stabilizing health care—especially in rural areas—easing the burden on families, and providing municipalities with better financial resources.
Saxony must cut costs. The government recently presented its draft two-year budget for 2027–2028. It must now be debated and voted on in parliament during budget deliberations. The state will not be able to avoid cuts. The exact extent to which the social sector will be affected is not yet clear.
