Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster considers the stationary controls at the borders with Poland and the Czech Republic to be doubly effective. On Friday, the CDU politician referred to figures from the Federal Ministry of the Interior contained in an answer to a question from Dresden MP Lars Rohwer. According to the figures, between September and December 2023, not only were 11,815 people found to have entered the country without authorization, but 4396 search hits were also made. In addition, the number of detected illegal entries fell from 6317 people in September to just 397 people in December. The wanted persons and objects such as documents and motor vehicles were found.

"If 30 people and objects are found at the border every day in Saxony alone, this is a decisive security gain for the entire state. With the border controls, we achieve a double effect by both seriously curbing illegal migration and successfully apprehending wanted persons and property through border searches," explained Schuster. For this reason, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) must notify the EU Commission of border controls for the maximum possible duration, at least until the EU's external borders are effectively protected.
