What would students face if the AfD took over the Ministry of Education in Saxony-Anhalt? Saxony's Minister of Education warns that school diplomas might no longer be recognized nationwide.

If the AfD were to take over the Ministry of Education in Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony’s Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs, Conrad Clemens, believes the recognition of high school diplomas from other federal states would be at risk. The CDU politician made these remarks to “Bild” following a meeting with his East German counterparts in Halle.

In issuing his warning, Clemens referred to the AfD’s education policy plans outlined in its election platform: The party wants, for example, to relax compulsory education requirements and allow parents to homeschool their children. Clemens criticized that this would primarily affect the most vulnerable students, who rely on support from schools. “Such unconventional approaches would jeopardize the recognition of diplomas from Saxony-Anhalt in other federal states.”

“The idea of placing foreign students and students with disabilities in separate classes also leads to a dangerous division in the classroom. Such ideas are unacceptable for our education system,” the Minister of Education explained. Clemens also rejected the plan to devote less attention to National Socialism in history classes. He argued that the curricula do not need a reinterpretation of history, but rather more education in democracy.

On Thursday, Clemens met with the ministers of culture and education Jan Riedel (Saxony-Anhalt), Christian Tischner (Thuringia), and Gordon Hoffmann (Brandenburg) for the “Central German Education Talks.”

A new state parliament will be elected in Saxony-Anhalt in two weeks. In recent polls, the AfD has been well ahead of the CDU. The coalition of the CDU, SPD, and FDP could lose its majority in September. The AfD is aiming to form a single-party government.
