The city of Leipzig is celebrating the 36th anniversary of the peaceful revolution of 1989. The commemoration began in the afternoon with the traditional prayer for peace in St. Nicholas Church. Many people, including civil rights activists from the fall of '89, flocked to the church. Georgian-born author Nino Haratischwili was also present. She was to give a speech on democracy following the prayer for peace. In the evening, the festival of light with artistic installations took place in the city center.
In addition, the foundation stone was to be laid for the long-planned Freedom and Unity Monument. At a cost of five million euros, part of Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz will be transformed into a park-like area with 50 white sculptures. The decision by the Bundestag to create such a monument was made in 2008, but its implementation was delayed for many years.
