The youth welfare offices of the districts are responsible for the accommodation and care of unaccompanied minors. However, the costs are to be borne by the federal and state governments. And that seems to be the problem.

The district administrator of North Saxony is complaining about unpaid bills from the Free State for the accommodation and care of unaccompanied minors. More than seven million euros are still outstanding from the Free State for 2023 and 2024 alone, according to district administrator Kai Emanuel (non-party). No reimbursements have been made this year either. In total, the district is currently missing around 8.5 million euros from invoices that have not yet been paid. The responsible Ministry of Social Affairs was initially unable to comment on this.

"If you order, you have to pay. We can no longer keep writing. The lid is full!" said the district administrator. The financial difficulties of the district are well known. "What else has to happen before the seriousness of the situation is understood? Should we open dunning proceedings against the Free State and threaten enforcement?" Emanuel emphasized.

According to him, there are 52 unaccompanied minors in the care of the youth welfare office in North Saxony, compared to up to 75 last year. They mainly come from Syria and Afghanistan.
