Saxony's Minister President and CDU party leader Michael Kretschmer has welcomed the agreement between Markus Söder (CSU) and Friedrich Merz (CDU) on the issue of the CDU/CSU's candidacy for chancellor. "It is good that we now have clarity. The CDU and CSU are united and ready for the necessary political change in Berlin," explained Kretschmer. He was "very grateful" to Söder that this path could now be taken together, Kretschmer said after Söder and Merz's press conference.
The two leaders of the CSU and CDU had previously agreed to propose Merz to the party committees as the Union's joint candidate for chancellor. Kretschmer is also the deputy federal leader of his party. He had already spoken out in favor of Merz as the candidate for chancellor on several occasions
