Saxon Justice Minister and Green co-lead candidate Katja Meier warned of a rise in right-wing extremism at her party's election campaign highlight in Leipzig. In this context, she spoke of the "baseball bat years 2.0". This refers to the 1990s, when right-wing extremist intimidation and violence occurred after reunification. "We must protect our state from internal and external enemies," she demanded, from right-wing extremism but also from organized crime and Islamist terror. "What we don't need right now is advice and populist headlines from Friedrich Merz," said Meier, referring to the CDU leader.
Co-leading candidate and Environment Minister Wolfram Günther said that the election was also about fundamental issues. "Do people who feel positively progressive want to have their center of life here?" It makes a difference whether the Greens continue to govern the country.
Greens parliamentary group leader Franziska Schubert described Michael Kretschmer (CDU) as a "minister-president who roams the country like an apocalyptic horseman" and is outraged.
