The federal government is funding broadband expansion in the district of Central Saxony with over 125 million euros. The funds will be distributed across six projects and 24,000 building connections, as announced by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport on Tuesday. This means that the Saxon district will be covered with fiber optics almost nationwide.

The ministry provided a total of 3.6 billion euros in funding for fiber optic expansion in 2023. This would enable 638,000 additional connections to be made in around 2,300 municipalities. Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) presented the funding certificates to 29 recipients on Tuesday.

The responsible district administrator Dirk Neubauer (non-party) explained according to the press release: "Our key to success is that we are pulling together here in the district and have created the conditions for the funding to be approved together with the municipalities." FDP member of parliament Philipp Hartewig from Mittweida was delighted with the funding: "Fast internet must be available everywhere, even in rural areas."
