With every pension increase, more pensioners slip into tax liability. The BSW wants to prevent this and is calling on the Saxon government to support initiatives at federal level.

The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) is demanding a tax exemption for pensions up to 2,000 euros. The BSW parliamentary group has submitted a motion to the Saxon state parliament. It calls on the state government to support a corresponding motion for a resolution by Brandenburg in the Bundesrat. Such a tax exemption would bring noticeable financial relief to many senior citizens, it said.

In Saxony, 407,000 pensioners were liable to pay tax in the middle of last year, and just under 6.3 million in Germany. The BSW motion was referred to the Social Affairs Committee by a majority.

CDU parliamentarian Tom Unger, like speakers from other parliamentary groups, accused the BSW of not presenting any counter-financing. In addition, pension law is an original federal law, Saxony has no influence on it, he said Unger. He considered the proposal to be constitutionally questionable. The CDU/CSU, on the other hand, wants to make working at retirement age tax-free - up to 2,000 euros per month.
