AfD in favor of fewer homes for asylum seekers in Saxony

The AfD in Saxony is calling for a reduction in accommodation for asylum seekers. Saxony maintains a large number of them, "some of which are completely empty (stand-by mode) and some of which are mostly empty", explained AfD interior politician Sebastian Wippel: "Saxony would therefore be well prepared in the event of the next major mass influx of asylum seekers." However, many of the properties are not even needed. Leipzig's Mockau II accommodation, for example, with 800 places, is currently only occupied by eight asylum seekers.

Places in the initial reception facility would cost a good 100 million euros in 2025

Wippel had submitted a minor question to the state parliament on this topic. In the answer, the Ministry of the Interior also referred to the costs of accommodation. According to this, almost 104 million euros will be spent on initial reception facilities in 2025. The AfD politician said that Saxony does not need a three-digit number of asylum homes. He argued that the government should therefore close all unnecessary facilities.

Number of asylum seekers falling sharply

The number of asylum seekers in Saxony also fell sharply last year. In the first eleven months of 2025, the number had almost halved. According to the Saxony State Directorate, 4,824 people were seeking asylum in the Free State by the end of November. At the same time in 2024, there were 9,447. In the previous year, 22,263 refugees arrived in the same period.
