With a new focus on everyday concerns, the Greens aim to improve the daily lives of people in Saxony. A social transit pass, heat protection, and the fight against loneliness are among their goals.

Solving Everyday Problems and Securing the Future: The Greens in Saxony have adopted new guidelines. The goal is to improve the daily lives of people in Saxony, said Co-Chair Coretta Storz during the presentation of the main resolution at the state convention in Bautzen. “We want to solve the problems that weigh on you and alleviate fears about the future.”

We need to move away from catchphrases and focus on the everyday issues people face. “And that’s exactly what we’ve done in the main resolution: we thought it through from the kitchen table.” The result is concrete solutions to problems. This focus should also be reflected in the wording. “It makes a difference whether we say, ‘Tackle the mobility transition with determination,’ or, ‘We’ll make sure the bus runs for you.’”

Key Resolution Meets with Broad Support

The key resolution, titled “It’s About You!”, was adopted almost unanimously in Bautzen—with one abstention and no votes against. Among its central points is affordable regional public transportation. A “Fair Ticket” as a social fare option for the Deutschlandticket and an education ticket for all of Saxony are intended to provide tangible relief for people with low incomes and families.

Following the scorching summer, which according to estimates by the Robert Koch Institute claimed more than 16,000 lives in Germany, a statewide heat protection plan is also being called for. This includes air conditioning in long-term care facilities, hospitals, and daycare centers; free drinking water in public buildings; and better heat protection for workers.

Another focus is on feminist policies, such as expanding protection against violence and providing free menstrual products. To combat loneliness, which affects people in rural areas more than in cities, plans include mobile community cafés and the establishment of community gardens.

Concerns About the AfD’s Election Victory

In her speech, Storz also expressed her concerns about the AfD’s election victory in the neighboring state of Saxony-Anhalt. “The AfD being a realistic option for power—that is extremely dangerous,” said the co-state chair. She said she was afraid, including for her parents, who live in Saxony-Anhalt.

But fear does not mean a lack of courage. “We will not let these wannabe patriots—devoid of decency and morality—take away our humanity, our solidarity, and certainly not our courage and our confidence in our strength.”

Schubert: BSW Is a “Post-Stalinist Bunch of Good-for-Nothings”

Franziska Schubert, the Green Party’s parliamentary group leader in the state legislature, had previously spoken out strongly against the BSW. She described the party as a “post-Stalinist bunch of good-for-nothings.” “They are openly cooperating with the AfD in Saxony, and they will help the AfD come to power in Saxony-Anhalt,” Schubert said. She therefore sees no differences between the two state chapters. The CDU and SPD, which form a minority government in Saxony, must ask themselves whether such a destructive force can be their partner.
