Construction work on the Sorbian Knowledge Forum officially began in Bautzen with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony. “With the Sorbian Knowledge Forum, we are creating a unique place of preservation, encounter, and innovation for the Sorbian people, the residents of Bautzen, and all those interested,” said Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) according to a press release. The groundbreaking ceremony is a strong symbol of the future of the Sorbian language and culture. Culture Minister Barbara Klepsch called it an important milestone. She noted that the foundation is being laid to ensure that Sorbian knowledge and culture continue to have a place at the heart of society in the future. The Sorbian Knowledge Forum is being built on the Lauenareal in Bautzen and, according to reports, is the Sorbian Foundation’s largest project to date. The site holds special historical significance for the Sorbian people: It is located near the Wendish House, which was destroyed in 1945. In 2030, the Sorbian Museum—featuring a new permanent exhibition and a traditional costume collection—as well as the Sorbian Institute, with its archive and library, are set to move into the new complex. A total of 50 million euros in funding from structural funds is available for the construction of the Sorbian Knowledge Forum. Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de).
