New sports fields, modern halls: Six Saxon cities can look forward to millions in funding. Competition for the 333 million euros nationwide was fierce.

From the first part of the so-called "sports billion", 11.3 million euros will go to Saxony. Six projects will benefit from the funds of the federal program "Renovation of municipal sports facilities", as decided by the budget committee in the Bundestag.

5 million will go to Wilkau-Haßlau

The largest sum will go to the district of Zwickau. The renovation and expansion of the Am Sandberg sports facility in Wilkau-Haßlau will be funded with around 5 million euros. In Dresden, the renovation of the Margon-Arena sports hall is being supported with 2.25 million euros.

Funding is also available for the Jahnsporthalle in Görlitz (1.3 million euros), the Döllnitzhalle in Oschatz (1 million euros), the artificial turf pitch at the Alfred-Kunze-Sportpark in Leipzig (950.000 euros) and a small playing field in Rodewisch in Vogtland (705,000 euros).

The support is particularly important in times of tight municipalities, said Leipzig MP and member of the budget committee, Paula Piechotta (Greens), according to a statement. "Eastern Germany, with its variety of traditional clubs, benefits greatly from this, especially as the backlog of renovation work on sports facilities is very high here."

More than 3,600 applications nationwide

A total of 333 million euros were released nationwide from the federal program "Renovation of municipal sports facilities", the so-called "Sportmilliarde". More than 3,600 applications with a total volume of 7.5 billion euros had been received for the first round of funding by the mid-January deadline. The budget committee decided on the selection.

"The fact that we have now been able to successfully push through six Saxon projects is a strong result in view of the extreme oversubscription - even if it is clear that unfortunately many good projects will come away empty-handed for the time being," said Carsten Körber, who is a member of the budget committee as a Saxon CDU member of parliament.

Two further funding rounds will follow until 2028, each with a further 333 million euros. In addition, a further 250 million euros will be available in the federal budget for the renovation of swimming pools nationwide.
