Germany has deported 25 men to Afghanistan on a charter flight. These were men who had committed criminal offenses in Germany, the Federal Ministry of the Interior announced in response to an inquiry. "Der Spiegel" had previously reported on the deportation flight.
According to a ministry spokesperson, the plane took off from Leipzig during the night and arrived in the Afghan capital Kabul in the morning. The men now being deported had reportedly been convicted in Germany of manslaughter, rape, grievous bodily harm and drug offenses.
The basis for this is a direct agreement with the Islamist Taliban ruling Afghanistan, which allows the German government to regularly deport people to Afghanistan without intermediary states.
