Young adults from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia currently still have to go to Berlin for an examination for the Bundeswehr. This could change - but only in the medium term.

Young adults from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia currently have to travel to Berlin for an examination with the Bundeswehr. "In the future, there will be 24 examination centers and eight large career centers with assessment available for the military muster," said a spokeswoman for the Bundeswehr when asked by the German Press Agency. Until these planned centers are in place, however, the examinations will continue to take place in Berlin.

The capacities required for a mandatory medical examination would be built up gradually, she said. Where these contact points will be located is currently still part of internal decision-making and planning processes. "Our aim is to establish new, modern structures," said the spokesperson. According to current planning, the necessary capacities should be available "in the required numbers" by mid-2027.

More people interested by sending out questionnaires?

The Bundeswehr does not currently have a definitive overview of the effect of sending out the questionnaires, the spokesperson also explained. The figures are usually collected on a quarterly basis. However, a positive trend can be seen so far. In Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, more applications for voluntary military service were received at the beginning of this year. The new military service should "support" this positive trend.

The law for the new military service came into force on January 1 of this year. All 18-year-old men and women receive a questionnaire to assess their suitability and motivation for the Bundeswehr. Men are required to complete this questionnaire. If the Bundeswehr does not succeed in recruiting enough volunteers with the help of the questionnaire, the black-red coalition reserves the right to introduce so-called compulsory military service on demand. Numerous school students took to the streets in several cities across the country because of the new law.

Under the current law, men between the ages of 18 and 60 are subject to compulsory military service. However, there is currently no compulsory conscription for military service in Germany.

More applications in January

In Saxony-Anhalt, 140 applications for voluntary military service were received at the end of January this year. In Saxony, 80 more applications were received this year, according to the spokesperson. There were 30 more in Thuringia.

The first letters were sent out on January 15 this year. More followed on January 31. "I can confirm that we have already received feedback from young men and women," said the spokeswoman. The young adults had one month to respond voluntarily.

The Bundeswehr is satisfied with the way it presents itself to young people. "The positive figures show the Bundeswehr's good image positioning as an employer and that we are reaching the right people with our recruitment campaigns," said the spokesperson. It was also worth trying out new approaches. The "growth of active military personnel" is and remains "the most important strategic goal with regard to the Bundeswehr's personnel readiness", emphasized the Bundeswehr spokesperson.
