Two old acquaintances are facing off in the mayoral election in Germany's easternmost city. Can incumbent Ursu once again prevail against AfD challenger Wippel?

Around 44,500 eligible voters in Görlitz are being called to the second round of the mayoral elections on Sunday. As in 2019, incumbent Octavian Ursu (CDU) and AfD member of the state parliament Sebastian Wippel are running against each other.

The second round of voting was necessary because none of the candidates achieved an absolute majority, i.e. more than 50 percent of the votes, on 10 May. Now a simple majority is enough, the candidate with the most votes wins. Ursu won with 49.1 percent, ahead of Wippel with 44.3 percent. The Left Party candidate Sabine Christian and the non-party candidate Hagen Jeschke trailed behind with just over three percent each.

The Greens and the alliances "Kommunalpolitisches Netzwerk Motor Görlitz" and "Bürger für Görlitz" support Ursu's candidacy. It would be his second term in office. He had to prevail against challenger Wippel in the last election seven years ago. Back then, the AfD politician was ahead in the first round, but Ursu then won clearly with 55%.

The polling stations are open from 8 am to 6 pm. According to the city, the provisional final result is expected around 8 p.m.
