Animal Welfare and Cost Savings — Leipzig Turns Off Streetlights

For environmental reasons, the city of Leipzig will permanently turn off the streetlights on two streets starting next week. This measure is intended to protect insects and other animals at night, according to the city administration. At the same time, it will save money by reducing electricity and maintenance costs.

The changes will affect a portion of Wundtstraße, which runs through the sensitive riparian forest, as well as a section of Travniker Straße in the Möckern and Wahren neighborhoods.

Traffic safety will remain ensured. Traffic regulations do not require street lighting in areas used exclusively by vehicles. After one year, the city plans to assess the impact of the shutdown. A decision will then be made on whether the streetlights should be completely removed.
