35 years after German reunification, Elisabeth Kaiser, Commissioner for Eastern Germany, takes stock in her annual report on Wednesday. It is the first report by the Thuringian SPD politician in the office of Minister of State, which she has held since the change of government in the spring.
The topic is whether and how East and West Germany have converged since unification on October 3, 1990 and where differences remain. Statistics show that, among other things, wages, wealth and inheritances are lower in East Germany.
A Forsa survey recently revealed that the sense of belonging has become rather weaker. Across Germany, only 35% said that East and West Germany had now largely grown together as one nation. In 2019, the figure was 51 percent.
