In 2024, significantly more women were in charge or had a say at the top of public authorities than ten years earlier. And what was the overall proportion of women in the public sector?

Women held slightly more than half of the top positions in public authorities in Saxony in mid-2024. This is according to data from the State Statistical Office. According to the data, 50.4 percent of the total of 5,150 employees in top management positions as of June 30 were women. In other words, they worked as heads of authorities, deputy heads or heads of department. In 2014, the proportion was still 44.9 percent.

More and fewer women

The proportion of women also increased in the following management positions - for example as heads of departments, specialist areas and as advisors - rising by 0.6 percentage points to 66.9% compared to 2014. The total number of women working in the public sector in Saxony fell slightly: Of the 215,155 employees on the reporting date, 63.7 were women, compared to 65.5 percent ten years earlier.

Saxony's Equal Opportunities Act came into force at the beginning of 2024 in order to modernize the statutory promotion of women in the public sector and make it more binding. According to the Ministry of Social Affairs, the law should also be seen in light of the fact that, although women make up a good 50 percent of the top management positions in the authorities, these are mainly positions in the school sector. In other areas, women are underrepresented.
