Last year, there was an increase of nearly one-sixth in the number of thefts at nursing homes in Saxony. The police recorded just under 550 cases in 2025—about 16 percent more than the previous year, according to a response from the Ministry of Health to an inquiry from BSW parliamentary group leader Ronny Kupke. Only about a quarter of the cases were solved, according to the report. Kupke is calling for immediate protective measures and independent, easily accessible channels for filing complaints. “We urgently need to know whether highly professional gangs are up to no good here or whether the nursing homes have a structural security problem,” he said, according to a press release. He accused the government of shifting responsibility onto care facilities and residents. The BSW representative called the ministry’s advice—such as not bringing large sums of money or expensive jewelry into facilities or keeping an eye on unattended handbags—cynical.
