The Gewandhausorchester Leipzig is extending its contract with Andris Nelsons: The 46-year-old will continue to lead the internationally sought-after ensemble through the coming years.

The Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons is entering his third term as Kapellmeister of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig. The contract with the 46-year-old has been extended until the end of July 2032, the Gewandhaus announced. Nelsons has been the 21st Gewandhauskapellmeister since February 2018.

The Gewandhausorchester Leipzig was founded in 1743 and is considered the oldest civil, i.e. non-court concert orchestra in the world. With more than 180 musicians, it is also one of the largest professional orchestras in the world. The Gewandhausorchester is in demand worldwide. Tours regularly take it abroad, especially to the USA and Japan.
