From the music stage to the camera: rapper Finna takes on the leading role in the film "Superbusen". The pop drama revolves around music, racism and the perspective of a young East German woman.

The successful pop novel "Superbusen", the coming-of-age story of a young East German woman, is being made into a movie. In recent days, the film team visited Chemnitz to film at the Technical University, at the Karl Marx Monument and for various street scenes. The main character Gisela, who moves from Dresden to Chemnitz to study after graduating from high school and founds a band called "Superbusen" with friends, is played by rapper Finna ("Zartcore", "Riot Feminist"). She is reportedly appearing in front of the camera for the first time in a film.

"Superbusen" is Paula Irmschler's debut novel, published in 2020, about life in politically heated times in East Germany. The author refers to the right-wing extremist riots in Chemnitz in 2018. It is about friendship, music and celebrations, racism, body shaming and the perspective of a young, left-wing woman who grew up in East Germany. Following its great success as a novel, the pop drama has already found its way into the world of theater: in 2022, Theater Chemnitz brought the story to the stage as a scenic-musical road trip.

Film picks up on vibrant music scene in Chemnitz

In addition to Chemnitz, filming for the new movie has already taken place in Leipzig and Dresden, as producer Laura von Portatius explains. "More than half of the shoot is finished." The rest should be completed by the end of the month. Fritzi Haberlandt as Gisela's mother and singer Gwen Dolyn, who founded the duo Tränen together with Kraftklub guitarist Steffen Israel in Chemnitz, are also in front of the camera. They released the album "Haare eines Hundes" in 2023.

The Chemnitz music scene has made a name for itself nationwide in recent years. In addition to Kraftklub and Tränen, the indie pop trio Blond is also at home here, as is the band Power Plush. The film makes reference to this special environment, as well as the nightlife in the city, explains von Portatius.

Where women are allowed to be as loud and snotty as men

Constanze Klaue wrote and directed the film, as she did for the adaptation of Lukas Rietzschel's novel "Mit der Faust in die Welt schlagen" about male radicalization in the provinces. "Superbusen" is the female, funny, loud and colorful answer to this, explains Klaue. She likes showing women who are loud, drink and can be as snotty as men. "In the film world, I would say it's an almost unusual look at a woman's world." The film is a tragicomedy with a lot of humor and lightness.

Further filming is scheduled for the coming weeks in Cologne and Berlin. The Mitteldeutsche Filmförderung is reportedly supporting the production with 750,000 euros. The film is expected to be released in cinemas in 2027.
