New board, new direction: the Leipzig Stasi Museum is making a fresh start after criticism and funding cuts.

After criticism and the loss of funding, the Leipzig Stasi Museum in the "Runde Ecke" is facing a new beginning. The supporting association Bürgerkomitee Leipzig e.V. has elected a new board, as the association announced on Saturday. The long-standing managing director and memorial site director Tobias Hollitzer is no longer a member of the board.

The head of the museum had been the subject of some criticism in the past. The exhibition in the former headquarters of the district administration of state security was considered outdated and a more modern presentation was demanded. Donors such as the city of Leipzig withdrew funding.

Hollitzer will "concentrate on the content and scientific work" as director of the memorial in future, the sponsoring association announced. The new board will manage the business on an interim basis.

"In addition, the new board will promptly contact the federal, state and local funding bodies in order to ensure the operation of the "Round Corner" in the current year and beyond," the citizens' committee announced.

The museum has housed the exhibition "Stasi - Power and Banality" since 1990. The memorial museum in the "Round Corner" also includes a Stasi bunker in Machern near Leipzig, where the local Stasi leadership would have retreated in the event of an emergency.
