For years, Leipzig’s Christmas tree came from the Vogtland region—but this time, no suitable tree could be found there. Now a fir tree is on its way from North Rhine-Westphalia. How will it be decorated?

For the first time, the tree for the Christmas market in Leipzig comes from the Sauerland region. The Nordmann fir, approximately 18.50 meters tall and from Bestwig in North Rhine-Westphalia, will be erected at the market on November 2, according to the market office. Two days later, it will be decorated with 300 red and gold ornaments and about 3,000 lights.

For years, the Christmas tree came from the Vogtland region. “This year, however, despite an intensive search in the immediate vicinity, no suitable tree could be found,” emphasized Walter Ebert, head of the Market Office.

The Leipzig Christmas market is scheduled to take place from November 24 through December 23. The Christmas tree, however, will remain in place until January 4 and will then be processed into lumber. The felling, cutting, and removal will once again be handled by the city’s forestry apprentices.
