Cracking nuts in a double pack: in the Ore Mountains, creative minds are reinventing the nutcracker - with an old mechanism and imaginative designs. What's behind the teamwork concept?

The Erzgebirge nutcracker is becoming a team player. While he was previously known as a grim-looking old man who used leverage to get at hard nuts as a loner, nutcracking is now teamwork. To this end, Seiffen-based wooden toy maker Markus Füchtner has developed the "Knack-Dialog" together with young designers and freelance creators. The nine new characters will be sold at an international auction in Leipzig this month. The proceeds are intended to promote the next generation of traditional arts and crafts.

Füchtner's workshop is considered the birthplace of the Erzgebirge nutcracker, which was invented here by his great-great-great-grandfather Wilhelm. In keeping with tradition, they represent authorities: King, Hussar, Forester. Markus Füchtner has also dedicated himself to this.

A year ago, the Hamburg agency Scholz & Friends approached him with the idea of dusting off the cliché of the old man from the Nutcracker, says Füchtner. "At first I thought: Oh God, where is this going?" But the design drafts amazed him, especially the idea of a mirror image of the king and queen.

What will the Nutcracker of the future look like?

"We asked students and designers: what do you think the nutcracker of the future will look like?" says Nicole Thalheim, head of the Scholz & Friends design team. The result is a colorful group of nine designs, including a sugar fairy and a minimalist in the style of Piet Mondrian. They each have a classic nutcracker figure as a counterpart, combining tradition and modernity.

The highlight is that they only work in pairs. Their upper bodies are attached to each other with magnets. The lever for cracking the nuts is missing. Instead, Füchtner has revived a mechanism that his ancestor Albert invented around 100 years ago. Instead of using a lever, the nut is cracked by hitting the figure on the head.

Traditional craftsmanship at the cutting edge

Like Füchtner, many workshops in the region are working to further develop this traditional craft. As a result, there are always new figures that reflect personalities in politics and society. There are also innovations in the design language. Technical refinements are also being worked on in collaboration with scientists. For example, using 3D printing or printable electronics, as Frederic Günther from the Association of Erzgebirge Artisans and Toy Manufacturers explains.

The "Tradition and Form" and "freiGEDREHT" competitions are held regularly to provide new impetus and encourage the creative development of wooden art. There are always unusual new ideas, reports Günther. The association does not set any content requirements. However, care is taken to ensure that all innovations adhere to the quality criteria that Erzgebirge wood art stands for.

Auction proceeds to go towards promoting young talent

The nine new nutcracker figurines from the "Knack-Dialog" are to be auctioned off at an international auction in a Leipzig gallery on March 25. According to Thalheim, work is underway to ensure that interested parties can also bid online. "These are individual pieces," emphasizes Füchtner. The proceeds will be donated to an "Erzgebirge arts and crafts fund". The aim of the fund is to support projects to promote young talent, safeguard craft techniques and further develop and market regional products. According to the plan, the figures will later also be available in a small series in a slightly modified form.
