Why the urn containing the ashes of the novelist and essayist is only now resting in Brno, what makes the tomb so unique—and who remains by his side even after his death.

Nearly three years after his death, the French-Czech writer Milan Kundera has found his final resting place. The urn containing the ashes of the successful author was interred at the Central Cemetery in his hometown of Brno, according to a statement from the city administration. He rests alongside his wife Vera, who passed away in September 2024.

The urn burial, which was not publicly announced, took place in the presence of only the author’s closest family members and friends. A spokeswoman for the city administration explained that this low-key approach was in keeping with the spirit of the writer, who had shunned public appearances and interviews.

The interment of the urns took place only now because a competition to design the memorial grave had to be decided first. The winning design is the work of Austrian architect Johannes Paar. It is said to be free of ornamentation, analytical, and minimalist—much like Kundera’s writing style. The simply designed tomb slab gives the impression of literally floating.

The Circle of Life Closes

“It is a great honor for Brno that we were able to fulfill Milan Kundera’s last wish to rest in his hometown and thus symbolically bring his life full circle,” said Brno Mayor Marketa Vankova. The French ambassador to the Czech Republic laid a wreath on behalf of President Emmanuel Macron.

Milan Kundera was born on April 1, 1929, in the South Moravian city. He published poems, essays, and novels such as *The Joke* and *The Book of Laughable Love*. A few years after the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, Kundera emigrated to the West in 1975. He achieved worldwide success with his 1984 novel *The Unbearable Lightness of Being*, about a love triangle, which was also successfully adapted into a film. Kundera died on July 11, 2023, in Paris.
