The Literaturhaus Leipzig was in danger of running out of money. How the city now wants to help and maintain the event program.

The city of Leipzig wants to support the Leipzig House of Literature in the long term - and thus secure the existence of the cultural institution. The association behind the Literaturhaus is to be supported with 205,000 euros annually from 2027, the city administration announced after an official consultation. The city council still has to vote on this.

The Literaturhaus Leipzig e.V. association was recently in danger of running out of money. In 1990, it was endowed with 30 million GDR marks in founding capital by the former GDR Ministry of Culture. It drew on this for many years, but the assets melted away. According to the city, it would have been used up by the end of 2027. The association has annual costs of around 280,000 euros.

The House of Literature offers an extensive cultural program, in particular readings with authors from Germany and abroad. According to the city, 167 events were organized at the Haus des Buches in 2025.
