The Gerhart-Hauptmann-Theater in Görlitz is looking for a successor to its current General Music Director Ewa Strusinska. She is leaving the theater at the end of this season. The theater announced that a decision on who will lead the Neue Lausitzer Philharmonie in the future will be made in mid-May.
According to artistic director Daniel Morgenroth, four women and 70 men applied for the position. The five most promising candidates will now each conduct a performance of Richard Wagner's opera "The Flying Dutchman", the production premieres this Saturday in Görlitz. Some of the candidates have already presented themselves for the post in recent weeks by conducting a classical concert.
Ewa Strusinska took over as conductor of the New Lusatian Philharmonic Orchestra in 2018. A selection committee was formed to choose her successor. In addition to the artistic director, the committee includes members of the ensemble and representatives of the opera choir and orchestra. The decision is to be made on May 13.
